Bungie Officially Abandons Destiny 2 with One Last Update

Despite highs of over 300,000 concurrent players and occasional player count spikes, Destiny 2's concurrent player count has been on a steady decline for over a year, with the game's daily peak concurrent player count on Steam dropping from around 26,000 players in January 2026 to just under 11,000 in May. Now, it seems as though, following the launch of Marathon, Bungie is finally throwing in the towel on Destiny 2, with the game studio announcing in a recent statement that it will ship Destiny 2's final update, Monument of Triumph, on June 9, 2026. Bungie says that stopping the development of Destiny 2 is part of "a new beginning" for Bungie, which it says will involve working on new games.

Following the end of live-service support for Destiny 2, the game will remain playable for the foreseeable future, although it remains to be seen how long the game will be replayable. Bungie describes the Monument of Triumph update as "a collection of love letters" to all manner of Destiny players. The new update will update a range of Destiny 2's mechanics and systems, including adding to the narrative, reworking the Director screen, adding a new permanent Pantheon with new boss challenges, updating and modernizing Raid and Dungeon loot, and introducing new Aspects, Void Hunter melee, grenades, and ability reworks for Warlock, Titan, and Hunter. The end of live-service support also means the end of seasonal events, and Bungie will be launching a new bundle called Destiny 2: The Collection, which will include all Destiny 2 content packs into a singular purchase, starting on June 9. The update will also see the permanent return of the Sparrow Racing League.
