WhatsApp's New Feature Makes Messages Disappear Right After You Read Them
Meta-owned popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, is on a roll lately. It recently introduced a new “Incognito Chat” mode for private conversations with the Meta AI. The company already has a handful of other new features in the pipeline, like better multitasking capabilities and encrypted cloud storage backup for safer chat storage. Moreover, WhatsApp is also working on a feature that makes messages disappear right after the recipient reads them.
WhatsApp is testing a feature that makes read messages disappear
The moment the recipient leaves the chat screen or closes the message bubble, the text disappears into thin air, and they can’t recover it.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp users will soon be able to set disappearing messages that delete after the recipient has read them. The Meta-owned platform is currently testing the new functionality in the latest WhatsApp beta build on TestFlight. When you decide to send one of these disappearing messages, the recipient gets a limited opportunity to read what you’ve written.
As the company explains, users can enable disappearing texts either for individual chats or for all new conversations by default.

It works differently from the existing time-based message vanishing options
It’s worth mentioning that WhatsApp’s stable version already offers a disappearing messages feature. However, for now, you can set messages to disappear after a specified period of time. Users can set these timers for 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days.
However, the new update will let users choose this option to configure a timer of “After reading”. They can choose whether their messages vanish in 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours after the recipient reads them.
It’s worth mentioning that unread messages always disappear after 24 hours by default. WhatsApp could roll out the new feature for all iOS and Android users in the coming weeks.
